T2: Establishing an Effective Participatory Process

Start Date: 01/06/2006
End Date: 01/03/2007

Actions Involved:

This task represents the core of the project as moving a community towards sustainability entails more than adopting programs related to water conservation, recycling, etc., rather it is a broad participatory process for the community's members to envision the community's sustainability and plan how to achieve it. The involvement of the communities members in the visioning process is vital as it will build the necessary degree of trust and consensus for the implementation of the developed Local sustainability action strategies. Therefore, the following actions are planned to secure broad public participation of the communities members:

T2.1 Publicizing the Sustainability Initiative

  1. Preparing an introductory letter that briefly describes the objectives associated with the implementation of the sustainability initiative and explains the importance of public involvement in the decision making process.
  2. Publisizing the introductory letter and the declaration of the sustainability planning effort by means of mass media broadcasting for a one week period.
  3. Contacting in cooperation with the project committee community-based organizations in order to invite them to attend the community awareness sessions.

T2.2 Organizing Community Awareness Campaigns and Electing Citizens' Committees

  1. Organizing three awareness campaigns targeting the members of each of the selected communities and local organizations:
    • The first campaign will provide the participants with the opportunity to communicate to the project team their opinions, needs and aspirations.
    • The second campaign will focus on educating the participants about the sustainable development concepts; the objectives of Agenda 21; the links between personal lifestyle habits and the improvement in the quality of the environment; and the national strategies and action plans as general guidelines for the development of local sustainability action strategies.
    • The third  session will aim at determining the communitys willingness to participate and become engaged in the implementation of the sustainability initiative. Citizens' committees will be formed.
